When you update OS, can you still do Smart Update

Hi: I've updated my OS to Mavericks and I'm wondering if it is still possible to do a "Smart Update" from the computer to my backup disk with the newly installed Mavericks, or if I need to start a new backup from scratch and overwrite the old one? Thanks! Bob
