The file system on the backup drive had a severe failure, which caused the kernel to 'panic' and stop before additional damage was done.

It's possible that you need to thoroughly simplify the USB bus to just the drive to see if that helps. Or, if you're using an image, make sure the host drive is formatted as HFS+ so it can handle large files (> 4GB - FAT32 won't work).
